BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) - Five electronic bingo halls across Jefferson County were shut down Wednesday afternoon after operators did not heed warnings of the county's district attorney.

The Alabama Bureau of Investigation simultaneously raided the bingo halls in Birmingham, Tarrant, Grayson Valley and Gardendale at 1:30 p.m., confiscating machines from each bingo hall.

The head of the Alabama Department of Public Safety says the raids WERE NOT part of Governor Bob Riley's Task Force on Illegal Gambling.

Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls said he asked the ABI to conduct the raids after warning the operators the machines were illegal and giving them time to shut down voluntarily.
