MONTGOMERY AL, (WSFA) - Eclectic Middle School is getting a much needed financial boost thanks to 50 volunteers, 500 citizens and one big steak dinner.
The school, which teaches around 500 students in fifth through eighth grades, took in $14,500 during its recent PSTO Steak Dinner and Drawdown. School officials say ticket sales were down from 2009 because of the difficult economy, but only slightly. They were grateful to everyone who participated.
Of the $14,500 raised all but $2,000 will go directly into the school's general budget. That money will pay for essentials like utilities, copy paper, toiletry supplies and other things. The remaining money will be held in reserve for unanticipated needs that may arise during the year.
The fundraiser is a consolidation of sorts.
A few years ago the school tried to raise money with numerous different projects throughout the year, like candy sales and gift wrapping. The Steak dinner was the Parent Teacher Student Organization's (PTSO) way of bringing all its endeavors into one major event. Now, parents aren't asked to donate to the classroom all year long.
Previous years' proceeds helped, in part, to purchase the school's SchoolReach telephone broadcast system which is used to contact parents with automated messages regarding testing schedules, special events, school closings due to inclement weather such as January's "snow days" and other important information.
Plans are already underway for next year's dinner.
