MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - One man is lucky to be alive after stopping inside a local gas station --only to take a bullet in his back minutes later.

It wasn't exactly what store employees or police expected at rush hour.

"With the Atlanta Highway being as busy, I wouldn't think so just because of the traffic coming through here being afraid to be caught," says Sgt. J. L. Walker with the Montgomery Police Department.

But police say it was just before 5:00pm Friday when they responded to a robbery and shooting at a Shell station on Atlanta Highway.

Walker says four people were in the store when two men came in demanding money.

"One went to the counter, and the other one held the victim that was shot at gunpoint."

Police say as the suspects entered the store, they grabbed the customer who was right next to the counter and forced him to the ground.

"One gunshot to the back," says Walker.

"Everybody shops at that Shell...it's just crazy," says Jasmeen Alexander.

Chasidy Cole and Alexander were at a restaurant next door to the gas station when everything happened.

"I'm really scared to come out to my car now because right here at the Shell right next to my job...it's scary," says Cole.

"If money is that hard...you have to go work for it just like we do. He shouldn't have shot that man, it's not worth it," says Alexander.

For now, police continue to search for the two men while folks nearby keep close watch of their surroundings.

"It can happen anywhere...you're safe nowhere," adds Alexander.

Store employees say the customer who was shot works just down the street and shopped there often.

Police don't believe he struggled with the gunman.  It's one reason why they can't understand what led the suspect to shoot him.

Police say the men got away with an undetermined amount of money. The victim was transported to Jackson Hospital. Police expect him to be ok.

Anyone with information regarding these subjects is asked to contact the Montgomery Police Department at 241-2651 or the Secret Witness Line at 262-4000.
