Newton emerges as Auburn's No. 1 QB

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Auburn has named junior Cameron Newton as the No. 1 quarterback coming out of spring practice.

Coach Gene Chizik said Wednesday that the decision was made after evaluating the four contenders' work during spring practice and over the last week. Chizik says Newton will have much to do during the summer and two-a-day practices to ensure he'll be the starter going into the season. Newton enrolled at Auburn in January. The 6-foot-6, 245-pounder was rated as the nation's top junior college prospect by after leading Blinn College to a national title. Newton spent two seasons behind Tim Tebow at Florida.
