MONTGOMERY, AL - The Greenetrack casino in Greene County near Eutaw has gone to court to try to stop the state from pursuing a claim that the facility owes $72 million in back taxes.
The Department of Revenue placed liens on the entertainment facility last year. The department said Greenetrack owed the taxes for 2004-2008. Greenetrack has sued, saying the revenue department did not follow the law before filing the liens.
The suit says that because the state has not assessed any tax on which the claim can be based, no lien can be filed. Greenetrack attorney John Bolton told The Tuscaloosa News the casino has moved to set the liens aside.
