BIRMINGHAM, AL (AP) - A man charged with ordering a murder from the Jefferson County Jail where he was being held has pleaded guilty to capital murder.
Martez Seay pleaded guilty Thursday to capital murder in the deaths of five people in the Birmingham area in 2008 and 2009.
Prosecutors agreed to seek sentences of life without parole. Three separate Jefferson County juries will be convened starting Aug. 23 to ratify the pleas and Circuit Judge Tommy Nail will sentence Seay afterward.
The 26-year-old also pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit murder in the 2009 shooting of his girlfriend, Kandi Hawkins. She was paralyzed. He was sentenced to life for that case.
His mother Yolanda Seay pleaded guilty in March to conspiracy to commit murder and hindering prosecution for conspiring to kill one of her son's co-defendants.
