BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Two black political groups in the Birmingham area have endorsed the white Democratic candidate for governor rather than the black candidate.

The New Jefferson County Citizens Coalition, headed by former Birmingham Mayor Richard Arrington, and the Jefferson County Progressive Council, headed by Emory Anthony, announced their support Thursday for state Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks.

Arrington and Anthony said the organizations didn't endorse U.S. Rep. Artur Davis of Birmingham because he didn't seek the groups' support.

Sparks has already been endorsed by the predominantly black Alabama New South Coalition, and he's only Democratic candidate for governor seeking the endorsement Saturday of the state Democratic Party's black wing, the Alabama Democratic Conference.
