AUBURN - Former Auburn women's basketball players DeWanna Bonner and Le'Coe Willingham helped their teams to wins last weekend as the WNBA opened its 2010 season.
Bonner, the 2009 WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, returns for her second season with the defending league champion Phoenix Mercury. The Birmingham native came off the bench to log 26 minutes in the Mercury's 78-77 season-opening win over the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday. She tallied seven points, six rebounds, two steals and a block in the win.
Prior to the game, the Mercury dropped its championship banner from the rafters and the players received their championship rings.
Willingham, a native of August, Ga., helped the Mercury to its WNBA title last season, but signed as a free agent with the Seattle Storm in the off-season.
Playing on Sunday, the Storm also opened its season against the Sparks, pulling out the 81-67 win. Willingham played nine minutes off the bench in the victory, pulling down a rebound.
Willingham and the Storm will play twice this week, first taking on Minnesota at home at 9 p.m. CT, Wednesday. The week will wrap up as she takes on her former team with the Mercury hosting Seattle at 9 p.m. CT, Saturday.
