MONTGOMERY – Governor Bob Riley has proclaimed May 22 through May 28 as Safe Boating Week in the State of Alabama. 

At a press conference on Thursday with Alabama Department of Conservation Director Barnett Lawley, members of the Alabama Marine Police and Department of Public Safety Director Colonel Chris Murphy, Governor Riley officially launched Safe Boating Week by inflating a life jacket to demonstrate and promote how they work. 

"Alabama is blessed with beautiful lakes and rivers for boaters to enjoy. With the Memorial Day weekend approaching, it is important for all Alabamians getting out on the water be prepared by wearing a life jacket," said Governor Riley. "Your best chance of surviving a boating accident is by wearing a life jacket." 

Over one million boaters will enjoy Alabama's one million acres of lakes, 1,600 miles of rivers and 53 miles of coastline this year.   

The text of Governor Riley's Safe Boating Week Proclamation:

WHEREAS, Alabama is blessed with an abundance of beautiful rivers, tranquil lakes and emerald coastal waters whose natural beauty draws thousands of Alabamians with friends and family for recreational boating, fishing and other activities; and 

WHEREAS, although recreational boating on Alabama's waters can be fun and relaxing, it also comes with inherent risks. Boating accidents can occur at any time and are typically the result of poor judgment and otherwise unsafe boating practices. Boating accidents involve both novice and experienced boaters and can occur on both calm and turbulent waters; and 

WHEREAS, boating injuries and fatalities are made especially tragic by the fact that most are preventable by simple safe boating practices; and 

WHEREAS, the best and easiest ways for Alabamians to make their recreational boating experience safe and enjoyable is for every boat operator to complete a boating safety course and to ensure that everyone on board always wears a Coast Guard approved life jacket: 

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Bob Riley, Governor of Alabama, do hereby proclaim May 22 through May 28, 2010 as Safe Boating Week in the State of Alabama.
