Oldest member of Alabama House drops out of race

Rep. Bill Dukes of Decatur Rep. Bill Dukes of Decatur

DECATUR, AL (AP) - The oldest member of the Alabama Legislature, Democratic state Rep. Bill Dukes of Decatur, has decided to bow out of the race for reelection to his District 8 seat in North Alabama.

Dukes said he made the decision partly because he is going to have eye surgery.

Dukes has been prominent in north Alabama politics for more than 50 years. He was a city councilman in Decatur before being elected mayor in 1976.

He served as mayor for 18 years and has been a state legislator since 1994.

Dukes had no opposition in the June 1st Democratic Primary. The Morgan County Democratic Executive Committee will choose a nominee to run against the winner of the Republican Primary between Terri Collins and Jason Putman.
