Jake Smith named SEC Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, AL. – Alabama senior third-baseman/pitcher Jake Smith was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week following the Crimson Tide's three-game sweep at Tennessee, the league office announced Monday.

Smith led the Tide to its fourth series win over the Volunteers since 2006 and helped the Tide clinch its sixth consecutive SEC Tournament berth.

"Jake had a really good weekend at Tennessee and he played a huge role in our success in the series," Alabama head coach Mitch Gaspard said.  "He had the big home run on Friday night to give us the lead in the 11th inning, but his two scoreless innings on the mound were equally important as he got out of a bases-loaded jam in the 10th and gave us a chance to win the game in the 11th inning.  It was a huge series for him and our team."

The Shannon, Ala., native single-handedly put the Tide in Hoover with his performance in UA's 4-2 series-clinching win on Saturday, May 21.  Smith hit a game-winning, two-run home run in the top of the 11th inning and threw two scoreless innings in relief to earn his first collegiate win on the mound.

Smith hit .308 (4-for-13) in the three-game series with two home runs and six RBI. He also compile an .846 slugging percentage.  For the season, Smith is hitting .245 (49-for-200) in 53 games with 11 home runs and 42 RBI.  He has hit 10 of those 11 home runs since April 10.
