Montgomery political consultant appears at bingo grand jury

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Well known Montgomery political consultant Joe Perkins has been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury investigating whether vote buying occurred with the electronic bingo legislation.

Perkins appeared at the federal courthouse in Montgomery on Wednesday morning to testify to the grand jury.

Perkins said he does not represent any bingo operators. But he said federal investigators wanted to know about e-mail he sent to certain individuals. He declined to name them to reporters waiting outside the federal courthouse.

The grand jury sessions are secret.

This is the second week the grand jury has met to investigate allegations of financial offers being made to legislators to support a bill authorizing and taxing electronic bingo.
