Records: Shotgun-toting father's wife turned him in

ATHENS, Ala. (AP) - Court records show the principal of Athens High School had suspended a student for five days for using a racial slur to a classmate before the suspended student's father showed up with a shotgun.

The News-Courier newspaper also reports that it was the wife of 51-year-old Thomas Brian Smoak who called authorities on Tuesday to warn them that her husband was armed and headed for the school. He was arrested nearby.

The newspaper says a police report shows an officer went to the school because someone had called to say Smoak was heading there with a shotgun.

An official said Thursday that Smoak remains in the Limestone County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 8. A judge denied his request to be declared indigent.
