Guard unit called up and assigned to Iraq

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Army National Guard says its 214th Military Police Company, from Alexander City and Opelika, has been called to active duty and will go to Iraq on a mission to train Iraqi police officers.

The Guard says a departure ceremony will be held at the football stadium of the Alexander City Sportsplex at 9 a.m. on June 12. The unit will report to Fort Dix, N.J., for extensive mobilization training before deploying to Iraq.

The 214th deployed in Operation Desert Storm, and also went to Iraq in 2003 for a year-long deployment.
