Siegelman endorses Sparks in Democratic primary
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman has endorsed Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks in the race for the Democratic Party nomination for governor.
Siegelman made the endorsement in an e-mail sent to his supporters over the weekend.
The former governor said he supports Sparks partly because of his plan to pay for college scholarships for Alabama children with the proceeds from a lottery. The plan is similar to one proposed by Siegelman when he was governor.
Siegelman was convicted in 2006 on bribery and other charges in a government corruption case. He is currently free on bond while that conviction is being appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.
Sparks faces U.S. Rep. Artur Davis in Tuesday's primary.
