MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The Montgomery Police have arrested a third suspect in the June 6 killing of a Canadian at the Red Roof Inn on Carmichael Road in east Montgomery.
Detectives arrested Juan Baskin, 31, of 526 Eastdale Road South, charged him with murder and put him in Montgomery County Detention Facility under $75,000 bond.
Police now believe that the victim Stanley Liku, and another subject were involved in a scam called a"pigeon drop" where they stole money from Toles. This murder was retaliation for the theft of this money, according to a press release from Capt. Keith Barnett of MPD.
Ellis Caldwell, 22, of 688 County Road 13, Hayneville, was the first person arrested in connection with the killing.
Barnett also said that a second suspect in the "pigeon drop," Soulemanou Ali, 35, from Milton, Georgia, was arrested on June 15 in Milton, Ga., and charged with Hindering Prosecution 1st Degree.
Ali has an Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer that has been issued for him and he is pending deportation, according to Barnett. Ali has been placed into the Fulton County, Georgia jail awaiting extradiction to Montgomery.
Police expect further arrests in this case.
