MONTGOMERY, AL (AP) - Alabama Secretary of State Beth Chapman says she believes the Alabama Republican Party should proceed with plans to recount votes in the June 1 GOP primary for governor.
Her statement comes after Attorney General Troy King issued an opinion saying the results of a recount could not be used to determine participants in the runoff. King said the recount could be used to challenge primary results to the Republican Party.
The recount was requested by third place finisher businessman Tim James. He appeared to miss by a little over 100 votes being in a runoff with state Rep. Dr. Robert Bentley and former 2-year college chancellor Bradley Byrne.
Chapman sent an e-mail this weekend to Bentley, James and Republican Party chairman Mike Hubbard saying she plans to proceed with preparations for the recount.
