Ala. woman sentenced for courtroom attack

DECATUR, AL (AP) - A woman was sentenced in Decatur to jail time for striking a man in court after he was sentenced for driving-under the influence during a wreck involving her daughter.

Michele Thrower Smith of Arab was sentenced after she agreed to a plea to an assault charge on Monday.

District Judge Shelly Waters sentenced her to 365 days in jail, but suspended 345 days and ordered Smith to serve 20 days in jail during weekends.

Waters placed Smith on probation for two years, imposed a $400 fine and ordered her to pay $720 in restitution to Steven Bearden, who told the judge he owes that amount for medical treatment.

Smith was accused of hitting Bearden, also of Arab, at his sentencing on a driving under the influence charge in March.
