ALBERTVILLE, AL (WAFF)- A newborn baby is in the Marshall County hospital while it's mother is in jail.

28-year-old Wendy Gale Schrimsher of Albertville is charged with of chemical endangerment of a child.

Schrimsher was arrested at Marshall Medical Center South after it was discovered the child she had was exposed to methamphetamine.

Sheriff's officials say they were notified by the Department of Human Resources when the child started having withdrawals from methamphetamine.

The county's sheriff said they're now concerned about the newborn's well being.

"Unfortunately, there's the possibility of brain damage in this case and any case where a child is addicted to narcotics based on the parent or the mother using drugs and it's an unfortunate situation," said Sheriff Scott Walls.

Sheriff Walls said it could be weeks or months to determine the long term effects on the newborn. He said the newborn is now in the care of DHR.
