Death investigation and possible freon leak at Eastdale Mall

The Montgomery Fire Department and the Montgomery Police Department are investigating a potential freon leak at Eastdale Mall.

Authorities were called to the scene around 11:30am on Sunday after someone was found dead in the restroom near the ice skating rink.

Around the same time, dispatch took another call suspecting a possible freon leak from the cooling equipment at the mall's ice rink.

Following the calls, MFD evacuated and secured the building and began to search for any evidence of freon.

Police cannot connect the suspected leak to the death investigation, and say it could take weeks before an autopsy confirms the actual cause of death.

Eastdale Mall will remain closed and evacuated until the fire department determines there is no chemicals inside the building.
