Eastdale Mall makes statement in wake of gas leak, death

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - The general manager for Eastdale Mall is offering condolences to the family of a man who was found dead inside the mall Sunday, a short time before a Freon leak was discovered nearby.

"First of all, I want to say that all of the employees of the Eastdale Mall, the employees of the retail stores and everyone associated with Eastdale Mall, off our sincerest condolences to the family of Nicholas (Nick) Burdette," said General Manager David Schloss in a news release.

"We are all feeling a small part of the enormous pain that his family is experiencing today and our hearts go out to all of them," he added.

The mall has been closed since Sunday when Burdette's body was found inside a restroom near the ice skating rink. A short time later, authorities began investigating a gas leak nearby.

An official cause of death has not been determined, and the results of an autopsy could take several weeks.

"With regard to the safety of the mall, the City of Montgomery's Fire Department as well as the Federal Department of Occupational, Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other experts conducted extensive tests last night," Schloss explained.

More testing was done Monday morning and "these tests show that the mall is currently safe" according to Schloss.

Schloss said "out of an abundance of caution" more testing will be conducted.

The mall has not set a re-open date, though Schloss says it will reopen "soon"

The mall is directing employees and customers to this website for the latest information:
