Greene County Commission challenges Governor's pick for new sheriff

EUTAW, Ala. (AP) — Greene County commissioners are challenging the governor's appointment of a sheriff for the county as they try to protect the county's electronic bingo casino, which the governor considers illegal.

The Greene County Commission decided Monday night to seek a court ruling on the legality of Gov. Bob Riley's appointment of former Alcoholic Beverage Control Board officer George Cook as sheriff. Within hours of the appointment Friday, state troopers visited Greenetrack to try to inspect its games, but were blocked by a judge's order.

Some question whether Cook lived in the west Alabama county until Riley's appointment. Riley spokesman Todd Stacy says Cook is a resident, but state law doesn't require that.

Cook replaced the late Sheriff Ison Thomas, who had defended the games.
