Prattville residents want river access restrictions

PRATTVILLE, AL. (AP) - Residents of a popular area on the Alabama River would like to see access restricted.

Two men, 26-year-old Willie Goodson of Marbury and 18-year-old Steven Odom of Deatsville drowned last week near a sandbar on the Elmore County side of the river.

Chief Deputy Ricky Lowery of the Elmoer County sheriff's office says there are several ways people can reach the area, making it difficult to restrict access.

The sandbar and areas around it are littered with remnants of old fires, broken coolers and dozens of soft drink, beer and water bottles.

Last week's deaths mark the only drownings at the sandbar that Prattville Fire Chief Stanley Gann can recall in his almost 30 years with the department.
