Eighteen principals named or reassigned at MPS meeting

MONTGOMERY, AL. – "Change is an important part of moving forward," said Montgomery Public Schools Superintendent Barbara W. Thompson, as she recommended sweeping changes to local school leadership at the Tuesday monthly meeting of the Montgomery County Board of Education. "The PARCA study showed us that leadership is the critical element in student success. We are focused on our students reaching the highest levels of academic achievement and improving our schools. I believe these moves will help do just that."

Eighteen principals were named or reassigned during Tuesday's action. 

Joseph Garner, who currently serves as principal of Hebron Christian Academy in Dacula, GA, will become the new principal at Lee High School. 

Dr. Raphael Richardson, current middle school executive director, has been named the new principal at Jeff Davis High School. 

Brewbaker Junior High Principal Cheryl Smith-Fountain will become the principal of Lanier High. Capitol Heights Junior High Principal Undrea Johnson will become the principal at Brewbaker Junior High. 

Sophia Johnson, Morris Elementary's current principal, will become principal at Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School. She replaces Robert Hunter who has resigned to take a position in another state. Tamara Wilson, an assistant principal at Bellingrath Middle School will become principal at Morris Elementary School. 

Marie Kostick, current principal at Jefferson Davis High and Mary Norman, current principal at Loveless Magnet High, are being transferred to the Central Office for strategic assignments. 

Wilson Elementary teacher Tara Carr will become principal at Catoma Elementary. 

Ozella Ford, the current principal at Davis Elementary, will become the principal at Wares Ferry Road Elementary. Current principal Marcus Roberts will become a Title I education specialist.

Dr. James Owens, currently at Fews Alternative, will become the principal at the City Youth Facility. Capitol Heights Assistant Principal Robert Price will become the new principal at Fews. 

Edward McDonald, formally the principal at McIntyre Middle will take over at Hayneville Road Elementary. 

Dr. Janine Brouilette, who is currently a technology integration specialist with Information Transport Solutions, will take over as principal at Wilson Elementary. 

Dr. Patrick Cain, current assistant principal at Stanhope Elmore High in Millbrook, will take over as principal at Capitol Heights Junior High. 

McIntyre Middle counselor Robbie Mangum will become the principal at Southlawn Middle School. 

Carr Junior High Principal Vince Johnson is moving to become the principal at Floyd Middle Magnet. Floyd Principal Kim Pitts will be transferring to Carr. 

The changes take effect on July 1, 2010. 

Thompson added that there could be additional changes as we get closer to the new school year. 

"Many of these moves were at the request of those involved," added Thompson. "I am pleased so many of our principals were interested in expanding their horizons by taking on new assignments. We are very excited about bringing new ideas and new visions to our schools. The citizens of Montgomery can expect great things from our schools, because we expect great things of ourselves."
