Woman raped by stranger standing in her kitchen

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -  James Ransefore says he's looking over his shoulder- something he's never really had to do in the Sonoma Pointe subdivision off Blackmon Road.

But several houses down on Santee Court, Columbus Police say a 27-year-old woman was raped in her home by a man she's never seen before. Friday, marked and unmarked cop cars canvassed the area.

"It's a nice quiet, peaceful neighborhood. At least it was until this tragedy came along. It's something that's never happened since I've been here and I hope that whatever goes on, that they'll be able to find the perpetrator," Ransefore said.

"It's getting terrible all over and now it's happened in our neighborhood when for 20 years, there's never been anything. I don't think we've ever even had a house robbed here," added Barbara Wicker, who has lived in the Stoneybrook subdivision across the street.

Officials in the Sex Crimes Unit say the victim went to check her mail Wednesday afternoon, came inside without locking her door and starting doing chores.

When she walked into her kitchen, police say an unknown man was standing there. While the man didn't appear to have a gun, investigators say he still threatened the woman, forced her into another room and sexually assaulted her- all with her 18-month-old child nearby.

All day Friday, detectives were working to develop leads, speaking with neighbors as well construction crews and builders working nearby.

"It makes me feel sort of insecure and especially with my wife and the other children in the neighborhood. It makes you want to be a little vigilant about what's going on in the neighborhood," Ransefore said.

The victim describes her attacker as a white man, 30 years old, between 5'10" and 6'1" with dark blonde or light brown hair and a surfer style haircut that comes to his ears.

News Leader 9 will continue to cover this developing story as police work to identify and track the suspect.
