MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Two former major league baseball players are interested in the upcoming coaching vacancy at South Alabama.
Ex-South Alabama players Mike Mordecai and Turner Ward both tell the Mobile Press-Register they would like to be considered. Steve Kittrell has announced that next season would be his last.
However, neither has a college degree, which athletic director Joel Erdmann has said would be a requirement for the job. South Alabama plans to hire a coach-in-waiting to work for a season as an assistant to Kittrell before taking over the program.
Mordecai has been an infield coordinator with the Toronto Blue Jays organization since the spring. Ward has spent the last three seasons as the hitting instructor for the Double-A Mobile BayBears.
