Birmingham sink hole snarls holiday interstate traffic

BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Alabama Department of Transportation says it needs to temporarily shut down the inside lanes of North and South bound traffic along Interstate 65 in Shelby County due to a sinkhole.

The Alabama DOT has decided to leave the inside Southbound lane of i-65 at mile marker 247 closed through the holiday weekend.

Crews have been out all day, trying to determine how large a sinkhole is and what safety concerns are involved.

The work, along with exiting roadwork on the interstate, is causing a big headache for drivers, especially during the holiday weekend.
