ALDOT working to fix interstate sinkhole in Shelby County

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Alabama Department of Transportation said Wednesday that state transportation engineers continue to work on plans to repair a sinkhole that developed on I-65, south of the Valleydale Road Interchange (Exit 247) at Pelham, in Shelby County.

The southbound (left) and southbound (center) lanes were closed starting Wednesday morning so workers could perform a drilling operation. The move left only the southbound (right) lanes open.

The northbound (right) lane was closed Wednesday at 6pm, but the two northbound (left) lanes will remain open.

If the drill crew finishes with the southbound (center) lane Wednesday, it will be reopened and the southbound outside (right) lane will be closed.

DOT said all northbound travel lanes and two southbound lanes will be open to traffic no later than 5:30 am, Thursday, July 8.

Depending on what is found during the drilling operation, the same procedure could follow Thursday night.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area.
