MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Republican candidate for governor Bradley Byrne is calling for the state attorney general to investigate whether a group running ads against him has violated state campaign laws.
A new group called the Conservative Coalition for Alabama is running the ads, but it hasn't filed any paperwork with the secretary of state showing who started the group or where it is getting its money.
Byrne says it looks like a repeat of the group that ran ads against him in the primary. That group, called True Republican PAC, received funding from the Alabama Education Association.
AEA Executive Secretary Paul Hubbert says he knows about the Conservative Coalition, but he declined comment beyond that.
True Republican PAC was headed by Andy Renner. Renner recentley resigned as chairman of the Marengo County Republican Party at the request of state GOP Chairman Mike Hubbert.
