BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A Louisiana official says BP PLC may cut payments to more than 40,000 people hurt by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill because their claim filings are incomplete.
In a letter to federal BP claims administrator Kenneth Feinberg, Children and Family Services Secretary Kristy Nichols calls the decision irresponsible.
She says BP did not notify officials of affected states about the change in policy, but a BP representative estimated it may affect more than 40,000 of the 99,500 claimants in coastal states.
Nichols says that will be devastating, and she wants to know whether the people were notified.
Nicholls says BP should have asked states if there are other ways to get the needed information from state records.
