Police ID suspected robber who died in crash

CLEAR SPRING, Md. (AP) - Maryland State Police have identified a man suspected in armed robberies at two hotels who died in a car crash as he tried to flee from a trooper.

The man was 63-year-old Arthur Williams of Gadsden, Ala.

Police say the first robbery was reported around 3 a.m. Sunday in Hancock, and another was reported about an hour later in Clear Spring.

A trooper had been following a suspected drunken driver when he noticed the car matched the description of the one seen in the robberies.

The trooper tried to pull the car over, but the driver sped away. The chase went on for about 2 1/2 miles. Police say Williams lost control and hit several objects, as well as a parked car. He died at the scene.
