BP: New cap 40 feet from being latched on well

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - BP says a towering new cap is just 40 feet away from the blown-out well and should be attached today before being tested.

BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said in a Monday briefing that the 150,000-pound piece of equipment was slowly being lowered to the well.

Suttles said BP was being careful.

The cap had been about 300 feet from the well when BP last briefed reporters seven hours earlier.

Underwater robots are supposed to attach the cap to the well.

Then BP will start as much as two days of tests and monitoring to see if the seal holds and oil doesn't start leaking elsewhere.

BP is drilling two relief wells so it can pump mud and cement into the leaking well for a permanent fix.
