Outsider Bentley wins Alabama GOP runoff

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Self-described outsider Robert Bentley has won Alabama's Republican nomination for governor over establishment candidate Bradley Byrne.

In the unofficial count Tuesday night, Bentley has 57 percent of the vote to Byrne's 43 percent with 67 percent of the precincts reporting.

Bryne ran strong in the state's four big counties, but Bentley outperformed Byrne in small counties. That included areas where Tim James and Roy Moore did well in the Republican primary.

Bentley was a little-known state legislator when he entered the race last year. He said he connected with voters when he pledged to work without pay until Alabama's near-record unemployment rate drops to normal.
