MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - State Rep. Billy Beasley easily defeated former Tuskegee Mayor Johnny Ford in the Democratic runoff for the Senate District 28 seat in the Alabama Legislature.
Beasley, who is white, won in the majority black district despite pleas from Ford that voters should elect a black to represent the district. Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton came to Alabama over the weekend to campaign for Ford, one of Alabama's most prominent veteran black politicians.
Beasley is a pharmacist who has served in the House since 1998. He is the brother of former Lt. Gov. Jere Beasley. He will face Republican Kim West of Auburn in the Nov. 2 general election.
