Surgeon General visits Ala bayou as spill ills rise

BAYOU LA BATRE, Ala. (AP) - Surgeon General Regina Benjamin has returned to the Alabama bayou where her old clinic survived batterings by hurricanes, and where residents now are dealing with emotional stress from the oil spill.

Speaking Wednesday in a church near the clinic at Bayou La Batre, she encouraged residents to help others seek counseling or medical attention. She said the spill is one of the most devastating blows the coast has ever had to deal with. Residents said outreach centers were needed as well as translators for the many Vietnamese and Cambodians working in the seafood industry on the Alabama coast.
