MONTGOMERY—Grammy Award-winning vocalist Michael Bolton will take the stage at Troy University's Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts to launch the 2010-2011 season.
Season tickets are on sale now for the upcoming series, which features a diverse mix of shows including beloved musicals, gospel music and classic rock and roll. Season tickets can be purchased by calling the theatre office at (334) 241-9567.
Bolton will kick off the season on Monday, Sept. 6, for a one night only stop as part of the global tour for his new album, "One World One Love." A winner of multiple Grammys for Best Male Vocalist, Bolton has sold more than 53 million records and has collaborated with some of the best known names in music, including Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Ne-Yo and Lady Gaga.
Bolton has sold out arenas worldwide and Davis Theatre Director Kristen Koehler said TROY is proud to bring Bolton to Montgomery.
"We are absolutely thrilled to open our new season with an exciting evening of entertainment from such a talented musical artist," Koehler said.
The season will continue on Thursday, Nov. 18, with a performance of the classic American musical that launched the songwriting collaboration of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, "Oklahoma!" Set in turn-of-the-century Oklahoma, against a backdrop of the high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys, "Oklahoma!" is the cherished love story of Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl. It features such favorite numbers as "People Will Say We're in Love," "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning," and "Surrey With a Fringe On Top."
On Thursday, Jan. 20, the Davis Theatre stage will rock with the classic music of Elvis Presley during "All Shook Up." The story of a square little town rocked by a motorcycle ridin', guitar playin', hip swivelin' hunk, "All Shook Up" features more than 24 Elvis hits including "Jailhouse Rock," Heartbreak Hotel," and many more.
The Tony Award-winning musical "The Music Man" will take the stage on Tuesday, Feb. 8. The story of fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill's attempt to con the people of River City, this timeless all-American musical features such classic tunes as "Ya Got Trouble" and "Till There Was You."
Alabama's own The Thrasher Brother and special guest Neil Thrasher will perform on Friday, March 18. Natives of Birmingham, The Thrasher Brothers are known for popularizing one of the classics of the gospel field, "One Day at a Time," and for their 1980s smash hit "Still the One." The group has won Dove and Grammy awards and was inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in 2005.
Finally, the season will close on Thursday, April 4, with a special performance by 4 Troops, a vocal group comprised of four American solders who served on the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan. The group sings on behalf of troops past and present to honor their sacrifices and raise money and awareness for their needs. The 4 Troops performance will support various charities including Wounded Warriors and the United Service Organizations.
In addition to the shows in the Season Subscriber Series, the upcoming season will also include two performances in the theater's annual University and Community Series. The Montgomery Ballet, partnered with the Montgomery Chorale, will take the stage on Friday, Oct. 15, to present "Carmina Burana," and the TROY Symphony Band will present "A Salute to Our Nations Veterans" on Thursday, Nov. 4.
New this year, the Davis Theater will usher in the Christmas season with "Sounds of the Season: Illuminations of Light and Remembrance," on Thursday, Dec. 9, featuring the talents of more than 300 student and 20 faculty members from TROY's John M. Long School of Music and the Department of Theater and Dance. This special fundraising performance is not included in the season ticket package.
