4 arrested in shooting of 9-year-old AL girl

LOWER PEACH TREE, AL (AP) - Four men have been charged with shooting a 9-year-old girl in the head as she slept in her Wilcox County home.

The girl, who was not identified, remains in critical condition at Mobile hospital.

The men, who are being held without bond in the Wilcox County jail, are: 20-year-old Terry Devon Stabler, 21-year-old Tommy Lee Portis, both of Lower Peach Tree; 22-year-old Antwon Gates of Arlington; and 19-year-old Keyon Gates of Pine Hill.

Police believe the men opened fire on the house where the girl was sleeping July 17 because they were looking for her uncle, though authorities are unsure why.

There were no attorneys listed for the men. They are scheduled for their first court appearance Wednesday.
