Ala. health dept. lifts swim advisories for Gulf

GULF SHORES, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Department of Public Health has lifted all swimming advisories for the areas of the Gulf of Mexico off its shores.

The department says improving beach conditions led to the decision. Restrictions had been set for more than three months since an oil rig explosion off the Louisiana coast on April 20 set off a massive oil spill that fouled Gulf waters.

Advisories were lifted for waters off Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Fort Morgan, Dauphin Island, and Mississippi Sound. Also, there were no more restrictions for bay waters close to Fort Morgan, Bayou St. John, Terry Cove, Cotton Bayou and Old River.

The department says it will continue to monitor the situation and update beach notices as needed.
