ANDALUSIA, AL (WSFA) - Andalusia Regional Hospital announced a partnership with 21st Century Oncology in May to bring a cancer treatment center to the hospital's campus. Monday, the project moved a step closer to reality as officials broke ground on the facility.

The center will bring comprehensive, state-of-the-art cancer treatment services to the people around Andalusia and surrounding communities. Hospital officials say the center will provide greater convenience for citizens in need of cancer treatment.

Once construction begins, it's expected to take nine to twelve months for completion. The grand opening is expected to be in the summer of 2011.

"This is an exciting addition to our hospital's campus and will provide cancer treatment services that will rival any in south Alabama," wrote Patty Ashworth, Director of Community Relations for ARH."We are very excited and proud to be able to bring this service to Andalusia."

Special guests included Hon. Seth Hammett, Speaker of the House, Don Bivacca, Division President, LifePoint Hospitals, Dr. Hejal Patel, Radiation Oncologist and Andalusia Regional Hospital CEO, Mark Dooley.

More than 150 people attended the groundbreaking event.
