ENTERPRISE, AL (WSFA) – Alabama has consistently ranked near the top as one of the fattest states in the country. Now, the city of Enterprise is joining the fight against obesity with a program called "Sunrise Fitness."
State health officials have made it clear that fighting obesity is something that requires both personal and community action, and it's what's behind this new city initiative.
It's called "Sunrise Fitness" for a reason. It starts 6:00 every Wednesday morning at the Enterprise Recreational Complex. The group meets up under the helicopter at the park.
The trainers are all serving on a volunteer basis from gyms across the city like Anytime Fitness, Gold's Gym, YMCA, and even from Fort Rucker.
The classes offered include yoga, aerobics, cardio strength intervals, zumba, and kettle bell training.
The program is completely free, and organizers say it gives folks the tools they need not only to lose weight, but to lead healthier lifestyles.
Stephanie Cresswell, Assistant Projects Coordinator for the City of Enterprise said, "This is just a free way for them to come out, feel better about themselves, and start working out if they've never tried their hand at it before."
Kathy Roth, a participant in the program said, "This morning we were all saying how nice it was to be able to come out and try different types of physical activities than we wouldn't have done otherwise."
So far, organizers say they are pleased with the turnout. It was originally scheduled to stop at the end of September, but now classes go all the way to the end of October.
