Officials: Arsenic not a problem at AL landfill

BAY MINETTE, Ala. (AP) - Environmental officials say new tests show a landfill in Baldwin County does not have a problem with arsenic contamination.

A letter from the Alabama Department of Environmental Regulation this spring told county officials to take steps to fix an elevated level of arsenic detected at the Magnolia Landfill in Summerdale.

But officials now say more detailed testing shows arsenic is not a problem. ADEM spokesman Scott Hughes said the earlier test results might have been a mistake.

The landfill is conducting ongoing testing because of early results showing the presence of vinyl chloride and acetone.

Hughes said both toxins were detected at extremely low levels and were not health concerns.
