LAKE MARTIN, AL (WSFA) - The Labor Day weekend ended tragically for a Montgomery woman.
Alabama Marine Police say Ashley Williams, 26, fell off of the front of a pontoon boat and died when the boat--and propeller--ran her over.
"We just thought it was somebody coming from the concert.. Who maybe just had too much to drink," said Kari Turner, who heard screams from across Tallassee Slough, where the incident took place.
Investigators say it appears alcohol did play a factor in Williams' death. They remind boaters to use caution.
"We encourage people to have designated operators always and, you just, you can't be too careful," said Sergeant Gary Buchanan of the Alabama Marine Police.
Right now, authorities are calling the death an accident. Locals say visitors need to stay focused on staying safe.
"My grandparents live here. This is their residence. I don't want them in danger for somebody else's careless error," Turner said.
Williams moved to Montgomery a few months ago from Virginia.
Marine police say resources were strained during their response to the call since only two officers are on duty to cover the entire lake.
