MONTGOMERY, AL. - The Huntingdon men's golf team is ranked second in the preseason Golf World/NIKE Golf Division III Coaches' Poll.
The Hawks received three first-place votes in the preseason poll, after finishing third-place last season in the NCAA Division III national championship. The finish was the best by a Huntingdon squad since becoming a member of the NCAA Division III, bettering a four-place finish in 2007.
Methodist received the top spot with eleven first-place votes, rounding out the top-five in standings behind the Hawks is Guilford, LaVerne and Saint John's (Minn.).
Returning back for the Hawks this season are senior first-team PING All-American Chase Blaich and third-team PING All-American J.P. Kircher looking to return for another shot at the national championship.
Blaich, recently competed in the U.S. Amateur Championship at Chambers Bay in August. As a junior, Blaich (77, 70, 72, 70), fired a two-under par round of 70 to finish with a four-day total of 289 in the NCAA Division III national championship. Blaich was also the top finisher for Huntingdon, finishing tied for fifth in the 190 player field.
Last season, Kircher (78, 76, 71, 72) also finished the NCAA Division III tournament well, posting an even par 72 to finish tied for 20th with a total of 297. Kircher is receiving the third-team PING All-American honor for the second straight year.
Huntingdon will open up the fall season this Sunday, Sept. 12-14, by competing at the Golf Week Division III Fall Preview, at the Southern Dunes Golf Course in Haines, Fla.
