A fire that broke out in Piedmont National, a packing company located on East 5th Street in Montgomery, near Ann Street and just south of I-85, is "under control" according to responders on the scene.
Motorists traveling in the area should exercise caution and might do well to consider alternate routes, though traffic appeared to be moving smoothly on portions of Ann Street and I-85 near the Ann Street exit at about 7 a.m. East 5th Street and Jean Street were closed off as firefighters continued to put out hot spots.
The fire broke out early Thursday morning. Francis Smith, a resident near the company, called 9-1-1 at 3:44 a.m. and firefighters were on the scene a little after 4 a.m. The building where the fire occurred was destroyed, but no nearby businesses appeared to suffer any damage. Two 18-wheelers parked near the building were destroyed. Two firefighters suffered "minor injuries" according to authorities.
