Gov. Riley approves TORP liquefied natural gas terminal off Alabama coast

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Gov. Bob Riley has approved the opening of a new liquefied natural gas terminal off the Alabama coast.

The TORP Technology facility got the governor's nod because the Texas company agreed to use an environmentally friendly method to reheat the gas that doesn't affect marine life. The company also has agreed to set up a $25 million fund to help with the protection, restoration and improvement of Alabama's marine life and coast.

The plant is expected to create 250 new jobs for the state.

The Houston-based company originally proposed an "open loop" system that uses sea water from the Gulf to warm up the liquefied natural gas. Riley said in 2008 he would not approve the company's application that way.

The terminal is a gas receiving facility and is not used in the exploration or production of oil or gas.
