No. 6 Auburn finishes 12 at NCAA Fall Preview

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Auburn junior Patricia Sanz carded a final-round 71 at the NCAA Fall Preview, but it was not enough as the sixth-ranked Tigers tallied a 14-over 302 in the final round to finish in 12th place with a 31-over-par 895.

Hosted by Texas A&M, the NCAA Fall Preview was a 54-hole tournament played at the par-72, 6,271-yard Traditions Club at Texas A&M, the site of the 2011 NCAA Championship. The three-day tournament featured nine teams ranked in the GolfWorld top-10 and 17 ranked in the top-25.

Auburn head coach Kim Evans said it was a rough start that plagued the round for the Tigers, but the team will have to improve before the next tournament.

"Patricia Sanz broke through and had a good round for us today, and I was glad to see that," said Evans. "We just had a rough start on the first few holes. We played well through the middle of the round, but did not make the most of it. We are going to have to work hard and improve before going to Vanderbilt next week."

The 1-under-par 71 bolted Sanz up 20 places on the scoreboard, taking her from a tie for 62nd after the second round to a tie for 42nd with her tournament-total 7-over 223.

Senior Cydney Clanton led the Tigers in the final standings, finishing 24th out of the 93-player field with a 2-over-par 218. She carded a 5-over 77 in the final round.

Next in the Auburn lineup was junior Haley Wilson with a final-round 78, placing her in a tie for 59th with an 11-over 227. Senior Karlin Beck, who carded an 80 in the final round, finished four strokes behind her in a tie for 76th with a 15-over 231.

Freshman Diana Fernandez, making her first appearance as a Tiger, rounded out the lineup in 79th with at 16-over-par 232 after posting a final-round 76.

In the team race, it was Alabama taking the title with a 15-under-par 849. LSU (287-283-280—850) finished one stroke behind Alabama while Southern California took third with rounds of 289-282-285—856. Duke finished fourth with a 4-under-par 860 while Georgia rounded out the top five with an even-par 864.

Individually, LSU's Megan McChrystal carded a final-round 65 to take medalist honors with a 10-under-par 206. Vanderbilt's Marina Alex finished second with an 8-under 208 while Southern California's Lizette Salas took third with a 6-under 210. The top five rounded out with a five-way tie for fourth at 5-under-par 211.

Auburn will return to action Sept. 24-26 in Nashville, Tenn., for the Mason Rudolph Championship. The tournament, hosted by Vanderbilt, will take place at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.
