Gov. Riley says BP denied the state's oil spill claim of more than $140 million because of AG King's lawsuit. AG King says the claim was not denied. It was returned because BP needs more documentation, and it can be resubmitted. King says he filled the lawsuit because BP wouldn't have paid anyway, and it's not putting the affected states' interests first.
Either way, BP is not giving the state millions of dollars it expected to help cover expenses, and more than $113 million will have to be cut from the education budget by Oct. 1 to meet legal requirements of a balanced state budget.
