OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – Alabama junior Bud Cauley fired a 4-under-par 66 Friday to take the first-round lead of the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational at the par-70, 7,205-yard Olympia Fields County Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.
As a team, the Crimson Tide shot a 5-over-par 285 to end the first round in fourth place. Florida and Augusta State recorded even-par rounds of 280 to pace the field. Ohio State shot 2-over-par 282 to end the first round in third place, while Indiana, Oklahoma State and Duke are tied for fifth at 6-over-par 286.
Cauley made five birdies and only one bogey to lead the Tide's opening-round effort. The Jacksonville, Fla., native began his round on No. 10 and got off to a nice start with pars on the first four holes. With a birdie on the par-4, 444-yard 14th and a bogey on the par-3, 215-yard 16th, Cauley made the turn at even-par 35. Back-to-back birdies on the par-5, 580-yard 1st hole and the par-4, 471-yard 2nd hole got his round to 2-under, and he added birdies on the par-4, 400-yard 4th and the par-4, 430-yard 7th for a bogey-free, 4-under-par 31 on the back nine.
Freshman Cory Whitsett was the Tide's second-lowest man with an even-par round of 70 on Friday and is tied for 13th place. Whitsett was 2-under-par after three birdies and a bogey on the front nine. The Houston native had eight pars on the back, but stumbled on the par-4, 430-yard seventh hole and carded a double-bogey to finish the side at 2-over-par 37. Whitsett's freshman counterpart, Bobby Wyatt, shot a 4-over-par 74 and is tied for 40th.
Junior Hunter Hamrick shot a 5-over-par 75 to end the day in a tie for 51st place, while sophomore Scott Strohmeyer shot a 6-over 76 and is tied for 56th.
Alabama will tee off its second round of 54-hole event Saturday at 8:40 a.m. (CDT) alongside Indiana and Oklahoma State. Follow the action at golfstat.com with live scoring updates throughout the day.
