Boyoko scores twice as AUM powers past Lee, 3-2

MONTGOMERY, AL. - Freshman Goffin Boyoko scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 69th minute, as the Auburn Montgomery men's soccer team powered past Southern States Athletic Conference foe Lee University, 3-2, at the AUM Soccer Complex on Saturday.

After leading 2-0 at the intermission, the Senators (4-2-2) allowed two goals early in the second period, as the Flames (3-4-2) were able to tie the score at two apiece in the 64th minute. However, Boyoko smashed in a headed pass from fellow freshman Daniel Rodrigues past Lee goalkeeper Benjamin Perez 69:48 into the match to provide the difference.

"I told our guys at halftime that if we don't come out with a sense of urgency and play sound in the second half, they will come back," head coach Wulf Koch said. "We scored off of two penalty kicks, which is something that we worked on this week, so that is a positive. I am not happy about losing a 2-0 lead, but I am proud of the character we show to battle back and win the game."

Junior Thomas Lindemann started the scoring early for the Senators, pounding home a pass from senior Gunnar Kristinsson just 3:25 into the contest.

Boyoko added his first goal of the match 20 minutes later, scoring on a header off a corner kick from fellow freshman Christian Holthaus. Holthaus also assisted on the game-winning goal by Boyoko off a corner kick.

Lee cut the margin in half, 2-1, in the 59th minute, when Fernando Barriga beat AUM keeper Steve Keller in a one-on-one opportunity.  However, Keller saved two shots and had his best save of the match a diving, one-handed swat erased following an offsides call.

The Flames tied the score at two at the 64:56 mark on a shot by Nathan Brown, which bounced down off the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Following the two-goal performance, Boyoko is now tied for second on the squad with three goals and leads the Senators with nine points.

For the contest, AUM posted 21 shots, compared to just seven for Lee. Boyoko led the team with five shots, while senior Stefan Arnarson added four.

The Senators will return to action next weekend, when they participate in the University of Mobile Classic in Orange Beach, beginning Friday, Sept. 24. On Friday, AUM will face Bethel, while on Saturday, the Senators will square off with Northwood University. Kickoff for both matches is slated for 4 p.m.
