MONTGOMERY, AL - Alabama State University and Alcorn State University will put their unbeaten records on the line this Saturday in a 4 p.m. kickoff at Jack Sprinks Stadium in Lorman, Miss. The original game time was 2 p.m., but has since been changed due to the anticipated mid-day heat.
The two teams are the only remaining teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference to sport unblemished records. The Hornets three wins are the most in the conference as well as the most conference wins as all three games have been conference matchups.
The Braves enter the game with a 2-0 record after defeating Langston University (50-27) and Mississippi Valley State University (27-9).
There are some reasons why these two teams are the top two teams in the conference; offense and defense. Alcorn State is the top scoring offense in the conference averaging 38.5 points per game, followed by ASU's second ranked scoring offense which is averaging 30 points per game.
On defense the Hornets are the top scoring defense in the conference allowing 17.3 points per game and Alcorn is the second ranked scoring defense allowing 18 points per game.
Individually, the Hornets have two players at the top of the conference. Andrew Lyons leads the SWAC in scoring (6.7), field goals (1.33), field goal percentage (66.7) and PAT kicking percentage (100).
Anthony Speight leads the conference in punting averaging 44.9 yards per punt on 13 punts.
Andrew Pitts continues to lead ASU in rushing with 193 yards on 39 carries. He has scored two touchdowns. Devin Dominguez is one of the SWAC's top passers. He has completed 42 of his 73 pass attempts for 526 yards and a SWAC-high nine touchdowns.
T.C. McWilliams has 15 receptions for 259 yards and three scores. Nick Andrews also has three touchdown receptions on nine catches.
Jazquez Rickerson continues to be a force in the kicking game, leading ASU in both punt returns (11.2) and in kickoff returns (27.8).
Demarques Taylor leads ASU on defense. He has recorded 16 tackles with 2.5 tackles for lost yardage and has also recorded a sack. Kijuan Riley has 15 tackles and has a team-high two interceptions, while Nigel Carr has 14 tackles.
Brandon Bridge will make his second start at quarterback for the Braves and has completed 13 of his 24 attempts for 167 yards and a score. Gabriel Nash leads Alcorn in rushing with 166 yards on 44 carries. He has scored twice.
Josh Cragin is the team defensive leader. He has 17 tackles while He-Tonye Tonye has 16 tackles and Javori Tribune has 10.
After playing the first two games at home, this will be the second consecutive road game for the Hornets. The Hornets will also be looking for their second 4-0 start under Head Coach Reggie Barlow. In Barlow's first season of 2007, ASU also started the season with four consecutive wins. Barlow is 3-0 against Alcorn State and the Hornets have won the last seven meetings between the two teams.
